Shawdesh Desk: The late military dictator-turned politician HM Ershad’s son Rahgir Al Mahi Saad Ershad entered in active politics buying nomination form from Jatiya Party on Tuesday for by-polls of Rangpur 3 constituency scheduled on October 5.

Saad said that he would be delighted and remain grateful to JP senior leaders if they would nominate him for the by-poll in Rangpur 3 that became vacant following death of his father and also former JP chairman Ershad.

‘I’m an executive committee member of the party and will like to dedicate life in politics,’ he said.

Saad’s stepping in politics created mixed reaction in the party. Many JP lawmakers and presidium members expressed satisfaction at Saad’s decision while some Rangpur-based aspirants protested at it arguing that dedicated politicians from Rangpur should get nomination.

JP chairman GM Quader, also Saad’s uncle, however, refused to comment on the issue. ‘All are like my children and being the chief of the selection committee I should not comment on any aspirant,’ he said.

JP secretary general Mashiur Rahman Ranga said that he impressed by Saad’s temperament of behaving like an ordinary activist but not demanding special favour being son of Ershad.

So far, Ershad’s niece Mehezabun Rahman Tumpa, JP presidium member Fakhruzzaman Jahangir and JP Rangpur city unit general secretary SM Yasir collected nomination forms.

Erhad’s nephew Asif Shahriar and JP organising secretary Abdur Razzaq are also on the list of aspirants.

The party will declare the name of the candidate on Friday.
